Hurricane Isaias: Heavy Rain and Flooding for the Nature Coast
· 3 min read
Isaias is now the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, and while its center is tracking toward the northern Gulf Coast, well west of us, our part of Florida is still feeling it in a big way through the weekend.
What We're Watching
- A Flood Watch is in effect across west central Florida, including Pasco and Hernando counties.
- Forecasts call for 3 to 7 inches of rain, with localized totals up to 10 inches possible.
- Expect heavy bands, gusty winds, and standing water on roads, especially in low-lying areas and near our rivers and creeks.
Your Safety Checklist
- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through flooded roadways: it takes just a foot of moving water to sweep a car away.
- Keep an eye on rivers and creeks near you: the Anclote, Cypress Creek, the Weeki Wachee area and others. They rise fast after heavy rain.
- Charge your phone and keep your emergency kit handy.
- Clear gutters and storm drains of leaves and debris so water has somewhere to go.
- Move important documents and valuables to higher ground, and snap a quick video walkthrough of your home for your records.
A Note on Insurance
A note on insurance: standard homeowners policies don't cover flood damage. If you've been thinking about flood coverage, this is a good reminder to check with your agent.
